In Vitro Fertilization
"In Vitro Fertilization is an option for couples with several types of infertility such as ovulatory disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, low sperm counts, and sperm immobility."
The procedure begins with ovarian stimulation. When the follicles are ready, the vaginal fornix is punctured by transvaginal
ultrasound and the oocytes are obtained. This procedure is performed under deep sedation. At the same time, a semen sample is
collected in order to select the best sperm for insemination.
Once the sperm are selected by sperm washing, each oocyte is inseminated with it.
From this moment, the specialist will perform the embryo transfer. In most cases, the transfer is done through the cervix, without sedation and under aseptic conditions. Once the embryo transfer is done, there is a wait for few days for the pregnancy test.
As complements to treatment, In Vitro Fertilization treatment, and depending on the needs of the couple, a Preimplantation Genetic
Diagnosis (PGD) for chromosomal abnormalities is performed, and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) in which, through a micro-needle,
the sperm is introduced in the cytoplasm of the oocyte.
The success of the procedure depends on several factors: the quality of sperm, the number of mature oocytes, the number of embryos
transferred and the process of implantation of the embryo in the endometrial lining.
